Larry Graham – Super Slapping Bass part 2

Here is the second video in a series that is taken from Larry Graham’s instructional video called “Super Slapping Bass. In this part of the video Larry shows how to play some of his trademark licks, some from his time playing with Sly Stone and some from his records with Graham Central Station. Although this video is not technically a bass lesson video, it still gives a great insight to Larry’s playing, and you can still make out a lot of the patterns he uses for playing his riffs.

Larry Graham biography

Larry Graham was the bass guitar player in the popular and influential soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone, and also the frontman of funk group Graham Central Station, with which he still tours around the world to this day.
He has also played with prince for a while around the year 2000.

Larry Graham is credited by many with the invention of the slapping technique, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass, although he himself refers to the technique as “Thumpin’ and Pluckin”. He says himself that he invented the technique while playing gospel in church with his family to keep the rhythm going when they did not have a drummer.
